PL and PLA End Caps
When assembling directly to the motor frame, the wires are brought
through the bracket hole and connected to the capacitor termi-
nals. Type PL end cap is then placed in position and the entire
assembly snapped into place. Off-motor mounting is similarly
accomplished except that Type PLA caps should be used to pro-
vide for leads emerging from the opposite side of the cap without
going through the bracket hole.

1.3 DUTY CYCLE
The duty cycle should be calculated for each application. It is the
ratio of the time the capacitor is on voltage to the total time of one
cycle. The duty cycles for the normal performance of Type 2
(MSA) capacitors are listed in Figure A. NACC Type MSA ca-
pacitors may be used in any intermittant application within their
temperature and voltage range where the duty cycle does not ex-
ceed that listed in the table in Figure A. This is in accordance
with the standards in EIA Specification RS-463 for Type 2 ca-
t Typical life expectancy is 50,000 cycles for 110, 115 and 125V
ratings, and 40,000 total cycles for 165, 220, 250 and 330V
ratings. The number of cycles shown in the table above are
for the convenient test time of 35 days total for all ratings. See
section 3.0 for testing procedures.

ing the vent is located in the up position. Vertical mounting with
the terminals down is not recommended because the capacitor life
may be reduced and the operation of the pressure relief vent im-
1.7 SAFETY
Because the watt-second value of these capacitors is high, pre-
cautions should be taken during the testing and application of these
devices.
paired.
Discharge resistors should be specified when there is a possibility
of a residual charge left on the capacitor or to protect contacts.
Mis-application, such as exceeding design limits or applying con-
tinuous AC voltage, may result in destruction or explosion of
capacitors.
1.6 SOLVENTS
Solvent residues on the capacitors after cleaning may penetrate
the seal and cause internal corrosion resulting in shortened life.
Alcohol or water detergent cleaning is not usually harmful but

The rated voltage is the rms value of AC voltage at which the
capacitor may be operated at its normal duty cycle and maximum
ambient temperature.
2.7 CASE INSULATION TEST
The capacitors shall be capable of withstanding the application of
1500 volts ac rms 60 Hz for 5 seconds between the terminals and
a metal foil tightly surrounding the lateral surface of the plastic
2.4 CAPACITANCE AND POWER FACTOR
The capacitance and power factor are measured by the voltage,
current, power method with 60 Hz sinusoidal rated voltage ap-
plied to the capacitor at standard conditions per EIA 463, Para-
graph 9. Whenever voltage is applied, there is the possibility the
capacitor may vent. Care should be taken to shield the capacitor
from observers to prevent injury during testing.

Procedure for Capacitance and Power Factor Measurement
Type MS motor start capacitors are intended for intermittent duty application. The capacitance and power factor should be measured
by or referenced to the ammeter and wattmeter (impedance) method described as follows.
Capacitance is calculated by the following formula
when frequency is 60 Hertz.
I
W
2652 x Amps
Switch
Capacitance (ȐF) =
Rated (Applied) Volts
Capacitor
Under Load
AC Line
V
Power factor is calculated as follows:
Watts
% Power factor =
x 100
Volts x Amps
WARNING:Voltage should not be applied for more than 4 seconds to prevent over-heating of the capacitor
and incorrect measurements.
Test with capacitor in upright position (contacts up) to allow proper functioning of safety vent.
Over heating of any capacitor may result in sudden expulsion of hot flammable material. Enclose the
capacitor under test to prevent injury to persons in the event of abnormal capacitor failure.
All measurements are referenced to 25gC (77gF). Capacitors just brought in from the cold or recently tested (hot) must be allowed to
stabilize to room temperature (3-4 hours)
Other methods of capacitance and power factor measurement may result in erroneous readings.
