The maximum forward current is determined by the thermal resistance between the LED junction and ambient. Given
an existing thermal resistance of 12 °C/W or 15 °C/W between the junction and the solder point, it is crucial for the end
product to bꢀ dꢀsignꢀd in a mannꢀr that minimizꢀs thꢀ thꢀrmal rꢀsistancꢀ from thꢀ soldꢀr point to ambiꢀnt in ordꢀr to
optimizꢀ lamp lifꢀ and optical charactꢀristics.

(MBB) designed for long shelf life. If XLamp LEDs are exposed
to moist ꢀnꢁironmꢀnts aftꢀr opꢀning thꢀ ꢃBB packaging but
bꢀforꢀ soldꢀring, damagꢀ to thꢀ LeD may occur during thꢀ
soldering operation. The following derating table defines the
maximum exposure time (in days) for an XLamp LED in the

listed humidity and temperature conditions. LEDs with exposure time longer than the time specified below must be
bakꢀd according to thꢀ baking conditions listꢀd bꢀlow.
Crꢀꢀ rꢀcommꢀnds kꢀꢀping XLamp LeDs in thꢀir sꢀalꢀd moisturꢀ-barriꢀr packaging until immꢀdiatꢀly prior to usꢀ. Crꢀꢀ
also rꢀcommꢀnds rꢀturning any unusꢀd LeDs to thꢀ rꢀsꢀalablꢀ moisturꢀ-barriꢀr bag and closing thꢀ bag immꢀdiatꢀly
aftꢀr usꢀ.
Baking Conditions
It is not necessary to bake all XLamp LEDs. Only the LEDs that meet all of the following criteria must be baked:

LeDs that haꢁꢀ bꢀꢀn rꢀmoꢁꢀd from thꢀ original ꢃBB packaging.
LEDs that have been exposed to a humid environment longer than listed in the Moisture Sensitivity section above.
LeDs that haꢁꢀ not bꢀꢀn soldꢀrꢀd.
LeDs should bꢀ bakꢀd at 80 ºC for 24 hours. LeDs may bꢀ bakꢀd on thꢀ original rꢀꢀls. Rꢀmoꢁꢀ LeDs from ꢃBB packaging
before baking. Do not bake parts at temperatures higher than 80 ºC. This baking operation resets the exposure time as
defined in the Moisture Sensitivity section above.
sꢇꢍꢀꢂgꢁ cꢍꢉꢎꢈꢇꢈꢍꢉꢄ
XLamp LeDs that haꢁꢀ bꢀꢀn rꢀmoꢁꢀd from original ꢃBB packaging but not soldꢀrꢀd yꢀt should bꢀ storꢀd in a room or
cabinꢀt that will maintain an atmosphꢀrꢀ of 25 ± 5 ºC and no grꢀatꢀr than 10% RH (rꢀlatiꢁꢀ humidity). For LeDs storꢀd
in these conditions, storage time does not add to exposure time as defined in the Moisture Sensitivity section above.
