Description  
Features  
The MK1604 provides clocks for video CD  
systems. It is designed to work with many popular  
MPEG 1 decoder solutions and microcontrollers.  
The chip uses MicroClock’s proprietary analog  
Phase-Locked Loop technology, and generates all  
of the outputs from a 16.9344MHz input crystal.  
This chip eliminates multiple crystals and  
• Packaged in 16 pin narrow (150 mil) SOIC  
• Compatible with all popular MPEG I decoders  
• Nine different microcontroller frequencies  
selectable from 4 MHz to 32 MHz  
oscillators in video CD systems, saving component  
cost, component count, board stuffing cost, and  
increasing reliability by removing mechanical  
quartz devices from the system.  
• Fixed clocks of 13.5, 27, and 40.5 MHz  
• Power Down pin turns off some outputs  
• All clocks are frequency-locked to each other  
• Two outputs of 16.9344. Each can drive 2-3 loads  
• 2.7V to 5.5V operation  
MicroClock can customize this device for any  
different frequencies for a small NRE.

External Components/Crystal Selection  
The MK1604 requires a minimum number of external components for proper operation. For a crystal input,  
a parallel resonant 16.9344 MHz, 18pF load, crystal is recommended. The frequency tolerance of the  
crystal should be 50ppm or better. For a clock input, connect to X1 and leave X2 unconnected. VDD and  
GND pins should be connected together, a decoupling capacitor of 0.1µF must be connected between  
them very close to the chip, and 33Wterminating resistors should be used on clock outputs with traces  
longer than 1 inch.
