DESCRIPTION
FEATURES
The MPQ5411 CARGO IC is a monolithic
power management solution for hearing
instruments.
Wide 4V to 6V Charger Input Range
100mA Output Current
76% Efficiency Typical
Feedback Voltage Accuracy: 1%
Integrated Push-button De-bouncer
Cycle-by-Cycle Over Current Protection
On Die Thermal Protection
1.22V Output Voltage (Fix Mode)
Stable with Low ESR Output Ceramic
Capacitors
It contains a USB compatible, constant current/
constant voltage charger along with a high
efficiency synchronous step down regulator for
powering digital devices.
The MPQ5411 CARGO IC also features cell
protection, a battery life indicator and a
separate power switch for powering additional
power devices.
WLCSP-16 (1.7mmx1.7mm) Package
APPLICATIONS
The hysteresis control scheme provides fast
transient response and eases loop stabilization.
Fault condition protection includes cycle by
cycle current limiting, output short protection
and thermal shutdown.
Hearing Instruments

Notes:
1) Exceeding these ratings may damage the device.
2) The maximum allowable power dissipation is a function of the
maximum junction temperature TJ (MAX), the junction-to-
ambient thermal resistance θJA, and the ambient temperature
TA. The maximum allowable continuous power dissipation at
any ambient temperature is calculated by PD (MAX) = (TJ
(MAX)-TA)/θJA. Exceeding the maximum allowable power
dissipation will cause excessive die temperature, and the
regulator will go into thermal shutdown. Internal thermal
shutdown circuitry protects the device from permanent
damage.

The MPQ5411 CARGO IC integrated linear
charger provides CC/CV charging algorithms. It
changes charge modes automatically depending
on the battery status. A typical charging profile is
shown on Figure 2.

When battery voltage falls below the trickle falling
threshold (Vthtrich minus 180mV hysteresis - 2.75V
typ.), the charging current is limited to 10% of the
programmed value to trickle charge the fully
depleted battery. After the battery voltage
reaches the trickle rising threshold (Vthtrich), the
charger begins to charge at the constant current
of the programmed value (ICHG). ICHG is typically
set to C/2. This is referred to as Constant Current
(CC) mode. Once the battery voltage reaches
CV-Level VCV (e.g. 4.10V), the charger will
operate in the Constant Voltage (CV) mode until
the battery is fully charged. Charging is
terminated when the current into the battery falls
to 10% of the defined charge current ICHG or the
charge termination timer (>3.6h) expires.

MPQ5411 CARGO IC also provides an ON Chip
temperature sensor to prevent charging outside
normal battery temperature limits. The charger
will only start to charge when the die temperature
is between 6°C and 49°C.
The charging current, ICHG is programmed
through resistor RISET from ISET pin to GND. The
relationship of the charging current and RISET is
shown in Table 1 and Figure 3.

CHARGING INDICATION
low side FET turns on to discharge the inductor
current. The low side FET turns off when zero
inductor current is detected. The converter is
entering DCM mode and waiting for the Vo
dropping below the threshold. When Vo drops
below the threshold, the high side FET turns on
again and start another cycle. The converter is
normally worked as DCM; While during the load
transient, it is able to go into CCM for a fast
transient response. This operation will minimize
the output cap and still always limit the max input
current close to peak current to protect the
battery cell. The peak current is set by the
resistor on the IPK pin. The relationship of the
peak current and RIPK is shown in Table 2 and
Figure 5. There is an internal 2kohm resistor in
series with RIPK to ensure the peak current is not
too large even RIPK=0.
During charging process LED will blink slowly
with a 2s period and 50% duty cycle. LED will be
turned on continuously when charge process is
finished.
DEAD BATTERY DETECTION
The cell voltage will be below trickle charge level,
the system will therefore start with trickle charge
current. If the cell voltage will not rise above the
threshold within 7 minutes, the IC will consider
the battery is dead and stop charging. LED will
blink fast with a period of 0.5s with 50% duty
cycle.

HIGH EFFICIENCY DC/DC
The core of the MPQ5411 CARGO IC is a high
efficiency integrated synchronous buck (η>76%)
to step down the voltage of the battery to a
regulated fix voltage. The peak inductor current is
always limited to prevent the damage of the small
cell. The default output voltage is set to 1.22V for
Step-Mode and fixed Mode. The max output
voltage ripple is controlled to be <80mV for load
transients of 45mA/5ms. The over shoot voltage
during the startup is controlled to be < 150mV.
The max output capacitor is up to 250uF. The
DC/DC is automatically disabled when charger is
connected (when VCH >3.8V). And can be
enabled through push button when the charger is
disconnected. (VCH<3.5V). When the DC/DC is
off, the output impedance is active low to
discharge the capacitor.

The effective switching frequency at a given load
can be influenced by the inductor value and IPK
setting.
The DC/DC converter is controlled through the
current limit comparator, Vo comparator and the
zero current comparator. If the Vo is below the
reference and the min off time is passed, the high
side FET turns on, and then the current through
high side FET is sensed and compared with the
current limit threshold. When the current reaches
the threshold, the high side FET turns off and the

Ipk and load is fixed) to keep switching frequency

The DC/DC features internal soft starts function.
The soft start time is about 0.3ms.
voltage change on its input to process the end of
battery life event. For example, to toggle the LED
EN pin thus blinks the LED with certain pattern.
The soft start voltage slowly ramps up from 0V to
Vref. When the soft start voltage is lower than the
Vref, soft start voltage overrides the Vref. With
large output cap, it is possible that Vo is not
charged to the regulated voltage during the soft
start time. At this condition, the converter will
charge the output cap with its max current as set
by IPK.
In fixed output mode:
The output of DC/DC is simply regulated at
1.22V.
PUSH BUTTON CONTROL
The push button is a toggle switch input: If the IC
is OFF a push action of longer than T_Push will
cause the IC to turn ON. Additional pressing of
longer than T_Push will cause the IC to turn
OFF. The push button controller contains an
internal timer, and a flip-flop. The debounce timer
will start counting when the output of the
debouncer is equal to the EN. And resets
whenever the EN pin bounce. The output flips
when the time is out. When the output of the
debouncer is not equal to the EN, the timer will
start to count as the idle mode delay timer. When
time elapsed, the debouncer goes to idle mode
and consumes no power until the EN pin
bounces again.
Thermal shutdown is implemented to prevent
thermal run away. If the die temperature is higher
than the upper threshold, the IC will shut down
until the die temperature is recovered.
END OF BATTERY LIFE INDICATION
The DC/DC can be set as adaptive mode by
connecting MODE to Vbatt; set as step mode by
connecting MODE to GND; and set as fix output
voltage mode by floating MODE. The capacitor
on the T_EOL pin acts as a low pass filter to
obtain the average voltage of the battery over
1ms. (which is depending on T_EOL capacitor
C3)
In adaptive mode:
The output of the debouncer then feeds the
signal to a flip-flop which is triggered by rising
edge to enable/disable the DC/DC and the Vo2
MOSFET.
The low pass filtered cell voltage is in the range
of 4.1V to 3V. The delta voltage of the slope is
1.1V.and will be divided by 10 = 110mV. This
slope voltage shifted by 1.1V generates the
The output of the flip-flop is forced to low when
VCH is connected (VCH>3.8V). it forces the DC/DC
and Vo2 MOSFET to be disabled. Toggling the
push button cannot turn on the DC/DC and the
Vo2 MOSFET at this condition. When charger is
removed (VCH<3.8V), the output of the flip-flop
will stay low, but will flip when push button is
toggled.

When the averaged Vbatt is smaller than EOL
threshold, the internal reference of DC/DC will
drop ~5% to indicate the END of battery life. The
default output voltage is fixed at 1.22V. So when
Vbatt< VthEOL, the output voltage will be ~1.17V.
The load IC needs to have way to sense the
Push times shorter than T_Push will be ignored
by MPQ5411 CARGO IC.

charger is connected.
POWER ON/OFF INDICATION
LED will blink once for 0.25s to indicate power
ON. And blink twice for 0.25s (tp=0.5s, 50% duty
cycle) to indicate Power OFF. LED blink routine
always starts on active low.

If the low pass filtered battery voltage is lower
than VthUVLO the DC/DC will be disabled. There is
NO UVLO hysteresis. The MOSFET to the Vo2
will also be turned off and the system will be in
Shutdown mode. Push-button is in-active in this
condition. MPQ5411 CARGO IC is latched in this
Shutdown mode until a valid external power
source is connected to VCH pin. (VCH > 3.8V).

SYSTEM EXTENTION
MPQ5411 CARGO IC offers a Vo2 pin to extend
the power system for more complex application.
Additional DC/DC converter can be connected to
Vo2 to draw the power from the battery while
share the power management function of
MPQ5411 CARGO IC.
System extension Vo2 is independent of output
MODE pin setting.

3.8*ICHG
When battery voltage is lower than UVLO
threshold, the MOSFET between Vo2 and Vbatt
will turn OFF. During the charge, when VCH is
>3.8V, the MOSFET also turns off.
The extension switch also integrates the over
current protection and short circuit protection in
case too much current is drawn from the battery
resulting in cell damage.

STOCK CONDITION SETTING
MPQ5411 CARGO IC offers a stock condition
setting to set the IC into shut down mode that
consumes only ~200nA current. Once the ST pin
is pulled HIGH with a positive pulse for longer
than T_ST_ST or VCH pin is pulled negative to
VCH<-0.4V with a negative pulse for longer than
T_ST_VCH, the IC turns off all the function and
can only be enabled when a valid external power
source is connected(VCH>3.8V). MPQ5411
CARGO IC has option to disable stock condition
activation via a negative pulse at VCH pin, in case
this function creates trouble due ringing.
When the discharging current is sensed higher
than the over current threshold (>3.8x ICHG) but
lower than the short circuit threshold (>5x ICHG),
the switch will turn off after the over current
detection delay time (TDOC=9ms). When the
discharging current is higher than short circuit
threshold (>5x ICHG), the switch will turn off within
the short circuit detection delay time
(TDSC=300µs). The switch will turn on again after
the auto retry time delay (TRAR=100ms). The
timing charts are shown in figure 7 and figure 8.
In the case that the battery voltage is discharged
lower than the UVLO threshold, the auto retry will

LED FUNCTION
Depending on the system status LED has
different function. In line with the process
tolerances, a variation of up to ±20% should be
accounted for the LED timing parameters.
1. Charging
LED blinks slowly with tp=2s and 50% duty-
cycle to indicate charging process.
LED blinks fast with tp=0.5s and 50% duty-
cycle to indicate a battery fault.
LED is continuously ON to indicate END of
charge.
2. Push-Button
Blink 1x to indicate OFF to ON transition.
Blink 2x to indicate ON to OFF transition.
tp=0.5s with 50% duty cycle.
3. EOL indication controlled by LED_EN
HI system IC can steer the LED to indicate
EOL if needed.
4. Charger Out of Thermal Operation Limit
Blink twice with 250ms on and 250ms off, and
then wait for 1.25s. Pattern repeats at 2s
period.
LED blink cycle always starts with a LOW (OFF)
indication.
