R58E Series Expert Registraꢀon Mark Sensors
Overview
R58 Expert offer maintenance-free, solid-state reliability for typical color
contrasts found in product and material registraꢀon applicaꢀons. Fast 50-
microsecond sensing response produces excellent registraꢀon repeatability, even
in ultra-high-speed applicaꢀons. This fast response, coupled with the small 1.2 x
3.8 mm (0.05 in x 0.15 in) sensing image, allows the detecꢀon of small and
inconspicuous registraꢀon marks.

R58E sensors feature TEACH mode sensiꢀvity adjustment by presenꢀng two
sensing condiꢀons to the sensor. TEACH mode has two opꢀons: Staꢀc TEACH and
Dynamic TEACH. Staꢀc TEACH is used to posiꢀon the two sensing condiꢀons
individually. Dynamic TEACH provides a means for teaching a series of condiꢀons
on-the-fly; the R58E samples the sensing events and automaꢀcally sets the
switchpoint between the lightest and darkest condiꢀons. The sensor then
determines which sensing condiꢀon is present for the shortest ꢀme and assigns
the Output ON condiꢀon to that event (therefore, LO/DO selecꢀon is automaꢀc).
If necessary, the LO/DO seꢃng can be reversed in Setup mode.

The sensor uses a tri-color LED during either teach process and automaꢀcally
selects a red, green, or blue sensing beam, based on the contrast between the
registraꢀon mark and its background. For applicaꢀons where the user wishes to
select the sensing beam color, individual colors may be enabled/disabled in Setup
mode.
Figure 1. Sensor Features
Sensiꢀvity may be fine-tuned at any ꢀme by clicking the “+” or “-” buꢁons on the
sensor. The eight-element barograph display clearly displays the relaꢀve received
signal strength. The discrete bipolar (one NPN and one PNP) outputs may be
configured in Setup mode to include a 30-millisecond ON-delay and/or OFF-delay,
if required.
Configuraꢀon is accomplished either by using the push-buꢁons on the sensor, or
by supplying input pulses using the remote input. The buꢁons may be disabled
using the remote input.
The construcꢀon of the R58E is extremely robust, with a die-cast metal housing,
plasꢀc opꢀcs, IP67 and NEMA 6 leakproof design for harsh sensing environments.

Installaꢀon
Install the Lens
The lens may be installed at either of two lens ports (see Figure 2 on page 3). The lens and the lens port cap are both threaded and
may be exchanged by hand; no tools are required. The lens and cap both include an o-ring seal.
Note: The lens port cap must be installed on the unused port for reliable operaꢀon. Fully seat the lens cap to ensure
a liquid-ꢀght seal.
Mounꢀng Consideraꢀons
The R58 Expert includes a total of eight size M5 threaded holes used for mounꢀng. These threaded holes are posiꢀoned to match the
mounꢀng hole paꢁerns common to other registraꢀon mark sensors. The R58E includes four M5 x 0.8 x 6 mm stainless steel cap screws
and a hex key wrench.
The R58E focus is 10 mm (0.39 in) from the lens surface. The R58E must
be mounted within 3 mm (0.12 in) of this distance from the surface of the
material for reliable sensing (Figure 2 on page 3).
Cap
Consider the following when mounꢀng the R58E:
•
When sensing a registraꢀon mark on a reflecꢀve (shiny) material,
mount the R58E at an angle which places the lens centerline at
approximately 15° off perpendicular to the material’s surface
(Figure 4 on page 3). This minimizes strong direct reflecꢀons
(which tend to overwhelm the sensor), and allows the sensor to
discern the relaꢀvely small opꢀcal contrast offered by differences
in colors.
Clear materials are poor reflectors of light. When sensing a mark
printed on a clear material (for example, a clear poly web),
posiꢀon a reflecꢀve surface directly behind the clear material to
return light to the R58E.ꢀThe printed mark, regardless of its color,
then becomes the dark condiꢀon, as it blocks the light from
reaching the reflecꢀve surface. Most clear materials are also
shiny; it is important to include a 15° skew angle when sensing
clear materials (Figure 4 on page 3).

Quick disconnect (QD) wiring diagrams are funcꢀonally idenꢀcal.
Sensor Conꢁguraꢀon
The R58E is pre-set to power up in Run mode and to sense the most recently taught registraꢀon mark. Quickly opꢀmize the sensiꢀvity of
the R58E using one of two available TEACH modes: Staꢀc TEACH or Dynamic TEACH.
Staꢀc TEACH: Both the Output ON and Output OFF condiꢀons are presented, and sensiꢀvity can be adjusted manually using the push
buꢁons.
Dynamic TEACH: The registraꢀon mark is presented during actual sensing condiꢀons, and the sensiꢀvity can be adjusted manually using
the push buꢁons.
Remote TEACH
Configure the sensor either using the push buꢁons, or using a remote switch. Remote configuraꢀon also may be used to enter Setup
mode to set the ON- and OFF-delay, and to disable the push buꢁons to prevent unauthorized adjustment of the configuraꢀon seꢃngs.
To access this feature, connect the gray wire of the sensor to 0 V dc, with a remote switch between the sensor and 0 V dc.
Follow the sequence of input pulses to configure the sensor (see the procedures in this document). The duraꢀon of each pulse
(corresponding to a push buꢁon “click”), and the period between mulꢀple pulses, are defined as: “T”: 0.04 seconds ≤ “T” ≤ 0.8 seconds.
Push Buꢂon Enable/Disable (Lockout)
In addiꢀon to its configuraꢀon funcꢀon, the remote input may be used to disable the push buꢁons for security. Disabling the push
buꢁons prevents unauthorized adjustment of the configuraꢀon seꢃngs. Connect the gray wire of the sensor as described in Wiring
Diagrams on page 4, and four-pulse to either enable or disable the push buꢁons (0.04 seconds < "T" < 0.8 seconds):
Note: Push buꢁons can be disabled/enabled from the remote line only.
Staꢀc TEACH
In Staꢀc TEACH mode, the sensor learns two sensing condiꢀons aꢂer each is presented one ꢀme. The sensor automaꢀcally posiꢀons the
switchpoint midway between the two condiꢀons.
The sensor returns to Run mode if either TEACH condiꢀon is not

Maximum Feed Rate
To opꢀmize performance and to ensure that all LED color and gain combinaꢀons are evaluated during Dynamic TEACH, the registraꢀon
mark must encompass the 1.2 mm dimension of the 1.2 mm x 3.8 mm sensing image for at least 0.002 seconds. Determine the
maximum feed rate using the following formula:

R58E Series Expert Registraꢀon Mark Sensors
Maximum Feed Rate in mm/sec. = (registraꢀon mark width in mm – 1.2) / 0.002
Example with a 5 mm registraꢀon mark:
Maximum Feed Rate = (5 mm – 1.2) / 0.002 = 1900 mm/sec.
Note: Registraꢀon marks narrower than the 1.2 mm sensing image width can be detected at feed rates less than 600
mm/sec, but the contrast is reduced due to averaging of the background and the registraꢀon mark.
Dynamic TEACH and Manual Adjust
Sensiꢀvity may be adjusted at any ꢀme when the sensor is in Run mode by clicking the “+” and “-” buꢁons. Each click translates to 1/2

is < 1% of load current.
2. Do not mount the sensor directly perpendicular to shiny surfaces;
posiꢀon it at approximately a 15° angle in relaꢀon to the sensing
target (see Mounꢀng Consideraꢀons on page 3).
Note: 1 second delay on power-up; output does
not conduct during this ꢀme
Repeatability
15 microseconds
3. Minimize web or product "fluꢁer" whenever possible to maximize
sensing reliability.
