The Evaluation Board for the Q5)ꢃꢄꢅ Single Chip 430MHz-950MHz RF Transceiver
has been developed to enable customers to test the functionality and to verify the
performance parameters of the device. The Q5)ꢃꢄꢅ Evaluation Board has been made
for 868MHz operation. This document specifies the usage of the Evaluation Board
and suggests some evaluation testbenches.
The Evaluation Board is intended for evaluation purposes only. It is not intended for
incorporation into an end product.
ꢅꢁꢀ *HWWLQJꢂVWDUWHG
To test the Q5)ꢃꢄꢅ device to its full extent, the following instrumentation should be
at your disposal:

A +2.7V to +3.3V variable DC voltage supply, and/or a +4.5V to +16V
variable DC voltage supply.

Low frequency generator / digital pattern generator
RF signal generator with FSK modulation capability
RF Spectrum analyser
Bit-error-rate meter (optional)
No software is necessary to use the Evaluation Board in Default mode (see Table 1).
ETSI document EN 300 220-1 V1.3.1 describes the technical characteristics and test
methods for radio equipment to be used in the 433MHz and 868MHz ISM band. A
copy of this document can be obtained from the ETSI web-site at KWWSꢀꢁꢁZZZꢂHWVLꢂRUJ.
The US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) standard CFR47, Part 15
describes the technical characteristics and test methods for radio equipment to be used
in the 902MHz – 928MHz band. A copy of this document can be obtained from the

Appendix 1 shows the Q5)ꢀꢁꢂ Evaluation Board circuit diagram. The PCB layout
and component placement is shown in Appendix 2. The component list is given in
Appendix 3.
Selection of standby mode or normal operation mode (transmit/receive) is done by
using on-board slideswitch S2 (STBY). Selection of power down mode or
standby/transmit/receive mode is done by using on-board slideswitch S3
(PWR_DWN). Setting of transmit/receive mode is done by using on-board
slideswitch S4 (TXEN). Selection of normal operating mode or programming mode is
done by using on-board slideswitch S5 (CS). The DATA and RF in/out signals are
made available at SMA connectors.
The CFG_CLK, CFG_DATA, CS, STBY, PWR_DWN, CLK_OUT, C_SENSE,
TXEN and DATA signals are also available to an external microcontroller or PC at
header J1.

Power and ground is applied to the Evaluation Board via connector J4 or J5. A +3V
voltage regulator is included after connector J4, enabling an input voltage in the range
of +4.5V to +16V. &RQQHFWRUꢃ-ꢋꢃLVꢃDQꢃXQUHJXODWHGꢃSRZHUꢃLQSXWꢇꢃDQGꢃYROWDJHꢃUDQJH
RQꢃWKLVꢃLQSXWꢃPXVWꢃEHꢃUHVWULFWHGꢃWRꢃꢌꢈꢅꢍ9ꢃWRꢃꢌꢂꢅꢂ9ꢃDQGꢃKDYHꢃFRUUHFWꢃSRODULW\. The
supply of the Q5)ꢀꢁꢂ device can be switched on/off by using slideswitch S1.
Diode D1 included after connector J4 is for protection against accidental reversal of
the power supply polarity. 6XFKꢃDꢃSURWHFWLRQꢃLVꢃQRWꢃLQFOXGHGꢃDIWHUꢃFRQQHFWRUꢃ-ꢋ.
The applied 11.0592MHz reference crystal has an overall frequency tolerance
(frequency tolerance at 25°C + temperature drift) that does not exceed ±20 ppm in the
operating temperature range -20°C to +80°C.
The on-chip VCO requires two external inductors L1 and L2. For VCO operation at
868MHz, L1 = L2 = 22nH is optimal.
The PLL synthesiser loopfilter is an external single-ended third order lag/lead filter.
The PLL filter shown in the circuit diagram is optimised for bit rates up to 76.8 kbit/s.
The external 1st IF-filter F1 is a piezoelectric ceramic filter with 330Ω input/output
impedance. Center frequency is positioned at 10.7MHz, and 3dB bandwidth is
180kHz.
For convenient connection of the differential antenna output/input pins to a single
ended antenna or 50Ω test equipment, a differential to single ended matching network
is included. This network matches the single ended antenna or 50Ω test equipment
impedance at SMA connector J3 to the recommended differential load impedance at
the Q5)ꢀꢁꢂ’s output/input stage. The employed matching network introduces an
insertion loss of approximately 2dB at 868MHz.
When a carrier is detected in the received channel, the C_SENSE output is +LJK
(logic “1”) and status LED D3 is switched on.

'HIDXOWꢃPRGHꢃRSHUDWLRQ
The nRF903 device features a pre-programmed Default mode that is available without
using the SPI-configuration procedure as described in the nRF903 datasheet. On the
Evaluation Board, Default mode can be set by using slideswitches S2 (STBY), S3
(PWR_DWN), S4 (TXEN) and S5 (CS) as shown in Table 1.

While in Default mode, the 868.1856MHz channel (channel #0) is activated with
maximum power setting and an output clock frequency of 1.3284MHz.

methods for radio equipment to be used in the 868MHz ISM band.
The parameters that are directly related to the approval of equipment operating in the
868MHz ISM band are:

In addition, the following measurement may be of interest to the user:

When measuring performance related parameters, losses in differential to single ended
matching network, connectors and cables must be taken into account. These are
typically in the order of 3-4dB.
Figures 3 through 5 show typical testbenches for the different measurements. The
actual setup may vary depending on the equipment available.
