Advantages and benefits of MLG0402S
Through our original, internal conductor, multilayer struc-
ture with reduced loss factors in high-frequency ranges
and the improved high-definition multilayer technolo-
gy, both the industry's smallest degree Rdc value and
a superb Q frequency characteristic supporting RF cir-
cuits' advanced design needs are realized. This takes
mobile phone multi-functioning, downsizing and thin-
ning one step further.
Remarkably small footprint through the condensation
of the modules
The line of 30 products providing superior high Q char-
acteristics in GHz bands.
The implementation area of the existing industry small-
est 0603 type was reduced by about 54% (occupied
board area including land patterns), allowing drastic
downsizing of PLL synthesizers, RF modules such as PA
and VCO, and TV tuner modules.
We have a product line of 30 products in total, includ-
ing 5 types covering 0.6-1nH by 0.1nH step and 24 types
of the E-24 series finely covering 1.1-10nH as well as the
12nH types. A superb Q-frequency characteristic was
achieved to support the latest needs in RF module de-
sign in the range of 800MHz-2GHz.

MLGSeries 0402SType
The control precision order of the characteristic parameters
such as internal conductor width, thickness, Internal interelec-
trode distance, distance between internal conductor and
terminal electrode, and so on, was further improved. Reduc-
tion of stray capacity between internal conductors and low-
Rdc was sought by configuring the internal conductor aspect
ratio optimized for the used frequency bands and the 0402
shape. The 12nH type maintains a self-resonant frequency of
2GHz, the same as that of MLG0603S, and the narrow allow-
ance and low-Rdc are on levels similar to those of MLG0603S.

Inductance tolerance
Sn gilded layers on the surface of the terminal electrodes are
high in purity and of great precision, providing good wetta-
bility to lead-free soldering components, and flux, such as Sn-
Ag-Cu and Sn-Zn. In diverse reliability evaluation tests, the re-
sults of soldering heat resistance, occurrence of whiskers, and
the joining strength after thermal cycling, were on a similar
level as those of conventional Sn-Pb gilded terminal electrode
products in terms of implementation reliability.

Development background and TDK-EPC's efforts
These minimum chip inductors supporting usage in
Downsized/low-loss RF circuits essential for multi-
functioning
high-frequency ranges are mass- produced through
the LTCC(low temperature sintered ceramics) process-
ing technology where internal conductor patterns with
optimized high-frequency characteristics are printed
and layered accurately on low temperature ceramic
sheets.
The low-loss and drastic downsizing of diverse RF mod-
ules such as PA, PLL synthesizers, VCO, and TV tuners
have been the utmost urgency for further thinner, light-
er, and increased functionality of mobile phones as,
while maintain the current size and thickness, the trend
of multi-functioning of mobile phones increases with
features such as QVGA wide LCDs where you can ex-
plore websites designed for PCs, mega-pixel digital
camera, high-capacity HDD that can save a large
amount of music source and movies, GPS systems, FM/
terrestrial digital TV tuners, wireless communication de-
vices, USB2.0 interface, bar-code generation feature,
and support for the FeliCa services. More control ICs
which comprises the module core are already shifting
to implement bear chips. Module components imple-
mented around ICs such as multilayer ceramic chip
capacitors which already have established mass pro-
duction system are also shifting from 0603 to 0402 type.
On the other hand, for impedance matching of high-
frequency circuits, chip inductors with thin-film technol-
ogy which realize high self-resonance frequency and
Q value relatively easily are also adopted. However,
these types of chip inductors where a thin-film conduc-
tor is formed in a spiral on the element surface have a
difficulty in controlling the aspect ratio of the thin-film
conductor (ratio of conductor width vs. thickness) and
show a limitation in the technology when it controls an
increased Rdc value as chip size is further downsized
(ie., narrowed conductor width).
